An wonderful reference - well definitely worth the investment

By Michael A. Shoemaker

It is entirely doable to pay longer reading trading books than doing any actual trading. this is often one among the few books which will stay on my bookshelf and that i highly suggest it FOR WHAT it's meant - a superb reference on technical analysis (TA).

What i used to be longing for was one thing to produce clear, concise descriptions on numerous technical indicators across all sorts - trend analysis, worth patterns, candles, oscillators, etc. And Murphy not solely will this well, however his work provides enough info that I don't see the necessity for one more book on TA on my bookshelf, although i do know that alternative superb books are on the market (e.g. Pring). however this one is enough on behalf of me. it's well organized and indexed in order that I will rapidly research one thing whereas i'm fitting trades and find the fundamental data that i want.

One surprise was how well written the book was and the way a lot of I enjoyed reading it. I expected a dry reference book however instead found a superb and fascinating scan, maybe with the exception of the chapter on purpose and figure that wasn't up to the remainder of the book. (If you're utterly new to TA, you would possibly notice it less entertaining, however compared to the dry tome that I expected when the monster-sized book arrived, Murphy is exceptional in his ability to convert most TA topics and examples into 'normal' English.) He is also not a proponent or zealot regarding anyone indicator kind, that I appreciate. He will an honest job of describing every at intervals the context of its price while not attempting to convert anyone to any specific indicator. As I don't believe in magic bullets in trading, I appreciate his simple approach.

Let me conjointly note what this book isn't in order that you are doing not get it for the incorrect reasons:

a) As you must gather from the on top of, this is often not a trading system. Murphy won't tell you which of them indicators to use most or within which mixtures to provide the simplest results. He can offer insight into several indicators and categories of indicators however he's NOT attempting to convince you to use any specific indicator in any specific manner. therefore he does not try and convince you of WHAT to use, simply helps you perceive WHEN, WHY and the way every indicator kind is employed by numerous traders.

b) Also, this is often NOT meant to be the whole, exhaustive statement on any of the topics coated. for instance, his section on Candlestick formations is straightforward, clear and includes several examples, however it's undoubtedly not a similar as studying Nison's works on Candlesticks. Similarly, you'll be able to notice several books dedicated to Elliot Waves, Fibonaccis and alternative topics. Murphy provides the fundamentals, however don't expect as thorough an evidence or justification as an obsessive book would offer. Then again, expect an obsessive book to undertake and convince you why its specific system or technique is such a lot higher than the other, one thing that Murphey won't try and do to you!

c) Finally, this book isn't meant to convert folks that don't settle for TA into believers. Frankly, it's a lot of easier to urge the majority to simply accept that `fundamental analysis' affects a stock's price and worth, however it's more durable for many to grasp and settle for that merely analyzing the stock's worth and connected indicators will predict future moves. Murphy's gap chapters embrace some easy basic background on TA, however verbal explanations have restricted price in convincing a pure `fundamentalist' that properly used technical analysis works. the sole thanks to break down this barrier, IMO, is solely to find out and use numerous indicators for a short while to start seeing how predictive they'll be. Murphy doesn't try and convert - he merely provides a learning reference. From there, anyone using TA has to follow to become proficient.

So, in summary, I highly suggest shopping for this book for what it's meant to be - a reference book on technical analysis. It will this job excellently.

Be good and obtain this book!

By Lance Mead

This is the primary book I ever scan on investing. My cousin, Paul, who was a broker at Merrill Lynch, counseled it to me. I followed Paul into the monetary services business, toiling twelve long years peddling stocks, bonds, mutual funds and insurance merchandise. throughout my tenure as a Wall Street skilled (I use that term terribly loosely), i need to have scan two hundred completely different books on investing. Oddly enough, I even have discarded several of these poorly written investor guides and still refer back to the current classic book penned by Peter Lynch, mutual fund demigod, investment guru, stock-picking legend!

Good however not excellent. Caters to the CFA takers

By Jaewoo Kim

This book deals primarily with equity and bond investment finance. this is often not a general finance book. i would not essentially advocate this book, for instance, to people who wish to check company finance.

The book will a quite sensible, however not excellent, job of explaining the elegant finance subjects like CAPM, bond pricing, and risk management. for instance, though I knew that higher stocks with higher Beta should have higher come than stocks with lower Beta (assuming CAPM is true), the book never bothers to elucidate exactly why. One should deduct the explanations from the CAPM assumptions and equations, that isn't continuously intuitive.

The book conjointly provides second set of queries for people who are finding out for the CFA. i do not shrewdness closely the book's queries resembles the $64000 CFA queries.

I want the book had a lot of Excel examples and issues. though the book doesn't ignore Excel, most of the issues and solutions involve employing a calculator. only if Excel, not the calculator, is that the principle tool of finance (and even Excel is being upstaged by information analytics using terabytes of data), i believed the book was very little too quaint in its examples, problems, and solutions.

Overall, this is often a pleasant textbook with a number of the most effective explainations of finance ideas I actually have ever scan.
